Marney Hall – Ecologist and Environmental designer
The Marney Hall Consultancy
A keen naturalist since childhood, Marney Hall’s career
has been devoted to the conservation of our countryside for thirty years. A
government research scientist at Monkswood Experimental Station for many years,
Marney specialised in the management of nature reserves for butterflies.
Marney is one of the country’s leading experts on the
re-creation and restoration of natural habitats, and she is a regular contributor
to natural history programming on radio, and has appeared on many television
programmes, including Gardeners’ World. Her show gardens, which always
have a strong environmental message, act as exhibition pieces for larger projects.
Her clients have included English Nature, the RSPB, and the Royal Botanic Gardens
at Kew.
Marney’s wildflower exhibition pieces have been part of
no fewer than eight gold medal-winning gardens. At The Chelsea Flower Show in
1993, her company was awarded Best in Show for the “Seaside Garden”.
She has won a Tudor Rose for best in show at Hampton Court for her design of
“The Garden at Pooh Corner” 1996. Her design of “The Quarryman’s
Garden” for Butterfly Conservation won gold at Chelsea in 1998. Her skill
in planting a wildflower garden is to make it look uncontrived, as if the flowers
grew naturally on site. The consultancy draws on the skills of experts in all
aspects of landscaping, including ecology, planting, natural ponds and water
features, and the design and construction of bespoke structures.

Philip Game – Designer
Pure Folly
Pure Folly supplies an increasing demand for individually designed
garden buildings and structures.
Philip started building follies in 1989, and formed Pure Folly
after unexpected commercial success. Since then he has used his design skills
on many projects, specialising in the design and construction of individual
garden buildings and structures, such as follies, bridges, tree houses, and
intriguing bespoke hideaways. His aim is to create something unique for each
of his clients.
Phil has worked with Marney Hall on several award winning gardens,
including “Garden at Pooh Corner” (Tudor rose, Hampton Court 1996),
“Quarryman’s Garden” (Gold, Chelsea 1998), “Dinner for
Two”, “Roots and Shoots”, and “The Potter’s Retreat”,
all getting silver gilt at Hampton Court, in 2000, 2001, and 2002, respectively.
At this year’s Chelsea Flower Show Phil will be dividing
his time, working on both Marney Hall’s project – “The Hasmead
Octopus’s Garden”, and also with Hazel Murray on J D Hazeldene’s
“View to a Future” garden.
